PRADHAN’S ‘BHANGERI PHUPU’ STAGED IN SILIGURI

Siliguri, August 24, 2026. Kanekhusi Theatre Academy, an active Nepali theatre organization in India, has staged the political comedy-satire play Bhangeri Phupu on Monday, August 24, 2026 at Dinabandhu Mancha, Siliguri, India.

The play was written and principally directed by seniour theatre practitioner Krishna Pradhan. The staging was directed by Sharad Gurung and Ashok Khawas, with Rakesh Baraily serving as director. The cast included Prayas Yonjan, Amit Lepcha, Sharmila Pradhan, Tilottama Pradhan, Babita Karki, Raja Thapa, Ramesh Chhetri, Laxmi Dewan, Jyoti Male, Pranita Gajmer, and Suren Lama.

Bhangeri Phupu is a political satire that portrays, through humor and satire, a powerful female political leader who abuses her authority and dominates the people after coming to power. Convinced that she will remain in power for life, the leader justifies both right and wrong as right while ruling with arrogance. After being removed from power, however, she gradually begins to acknowledge her mistakes one by one.

After years of exploitation, the people rise up and overthrow the ruling leader. They surround her house with the intention of taking action against her and her brutal nephew. Although the two are temporarily protected by police intervention, public anger and opposition continue. Eventually, when Bhangeri Phupu and her nephew attempt to flee, the people chase them. The play ends when police intervene once again as they try to escape. The play presents themes of abuse of power, political arrogance, authoritarian tendencies, and popular resistance through comedy and political satire.

According to writer Krishna Pradhan, the production was staged at Dinabandhu Mancha under a theatre-hall subsidy provided by the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs of the Government of West Bengal, India. He said it has been regularly staging plays at Dinabandhu Mancha by making use of the subsidy. So far, the Theatre Academy has staged six plays at the venue.

The Theatre Academy also said it is preparing to stage Aankha on September 30 andh Pradhan’s Dosh Mero Ho on November 4, 2026.
