COMIC-SATIRE PLAY ‘KASTO LAGYO TA ANTA!’ STAGED IN SILIGURI
PRAVEEN PUMA, Kathmandu, August 25, 2026. Kaneshusi Theatre Academy has staged the social comedy-satire play Kasto Lagyo Ta Anta! in Siliguri, continuing its work to promote original Nepali theatre and provide a platform for local theatre artists.
Written and principally directed by Krishna Pradhan, the play was staged on Monday, August 24, 2026, at Dinabandhu Mancha in Siliguri under a theatre-hall subsidy provided by the Government of West Bengal.
The play explores the comic tensions and financial pressures that arise when guests overstay their welcome. It centers on Anupama, whose household faces a series of unexpected situations after two visitors arrive under different circumstances.
The story begins when Pratistha, a friend from Anupama’s village, comes to stay for one night while appearing for a job interview. Attracted by Anupama’s expensive makeup products, Pratistha steals some of them and leaves with them, leaving Anupama distressed.
Meanwhile, Maila Kaka, another villager, arrives at Anupama’s home in connection with office work. What is expected to be a short stay stretches to ten to fifteen days, placing increasing pressure on the household budget of Anupama and her husband, Abhishek.
Determined to persuade Kaka to leave, Anupama and Abhishek devise a comic plan. While Kaka is away, they stage a heated quarrel in the hope that the apparent conflict will make him uncomfortable enough to leave. When Kaka returns in the evening and witnesses the argument, he becomes upset and leaves the house.
Believing their plan has worked, Anupama and Abhishek begin celebrating and compliment each other on their acting. Unknown to them, however, Kaka has quietly returned and is listening to their conversation.
At the height of their celebration, Kaka suddenly appears behind them and asks how they liked his own performance of pretending to leave the house. His unexpected revelation leaves the couple embarrassed and speechless.
The production was directed by Sharad Gurung and Ashok Khaswa, with Rakesh Baraily also serving in a directorial role. The cast includes Sharad Gurung, Ashok Khaswa, Manikumar Sharma, Gopal Bishwakarma, Pradeep Khatiwada, Anju Pradhan and Anusha Rai.
Kaneshusi Theatre Academy has been regularly presenting Nepali-language plays at Dinabandhu Mancha. The theatre-hall subsidy provided by the Government of West Bengal has enabled local Nepali theatre practitioners and organizations to present their productions to audiences.
The academy said it will continue its regular theatre programme. Its upcoming productions include ‘Aankha’ on September 30 and Krishna Pradhan’s ‘Dosh Mero Ho’ on November 4.
With its continuing productions, Kaneshusi Theatre Academy remains active in promoting original Nepali-language theatre, supporting local artists and sustaining theatrical activity in the Indian Nepali-speaking community.
